Review: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

I read this deeply entrancing book many years ago, before it even was made into a film, when a friend lent it to me.

What really fascinated me even more than the wonderful storytelling itself was the lushness with which the author (and translator) conveyed each and every aroma throughout the book. While the film is nicely shot, it’s this very aspect of the writing that makes the movie seem completely one dimensional. This book is a very clear example of where prose can take that imagery can not.
